You’ve been to a health care provider who told you that you or someone you love has “X.” You don’t agree with X or don’t understand what X or really means. With the current health care model, many providers venture down a diagnostic path based on incomplete information, a 12-15 minute evaluation, and the use of brief screening tools, rather than doing a thorough evaluation. For instance… Adult male who has difficulty getting to sleep goes to a physician who says “you’re depressed” and after a short evaluation prescribes an antidepressant medication. Fine, however, sleep problems can be due to a variety of different factors including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, behavioral or lifestyle considerations, general stress, substance use or abuse, environmental factors, and others. I believe in the value of a comprehensive assessment that includes psychological, biological, social, and environmental factors. I am happy to provide a second opinion and confer with other healthcare providers during the course of treatment.
